Traumatic events that happen just before a flight can also cause a person to fear flying.  For example, if you got laid off just before stepping into an airplane, or got into a horrible automobile accident before flying out on vacation.

Sometimes when something like this happens, a person transfers the fear they felt during the traumatic event to all air travel. This is known as emotional reasoning, which means you think something is dangerous because you feel anxiety while doing it.

Although people have all kinds of reasons why fear kicks in when they board a plane, panic disorder is the primary one.

An Irrational Fear

Whatever the cause, aviophobia is an irrational fear shared by millions of others.

Of course, we all know air travel does have its risks.

However, they’re minuscule compared to other things. For example, you have a greater risk of getting struck by lightning. The chances of this unfortunate event ever happening are 1 in 3,000 as opposed to a probability of 1 in 11 million of getting into an airplane accident.

An airplane getting hit by lightning could make a person seek out cures like hypnotherapy or other methods to overcome their fear of flying.

It’s more dangerous to be a passenger in a car than it is to fly. What’s more, 96% of people survive an airplane accident—a slightly higher percentage than survive deadly car crashes.

What Are the Symptoms of Fear of Flying?

The symptoms of fear of flying are as follows:

  • Shaking
  • Feeling dizzy
  • Irritability
  • Sweating
  • Stomach cramps
  • Heart palpitations

Not everyone who suffers from a fear of flying will experience all these symptoms.

Fear of flying can range from mild anxiety to a state of abject terror, which can stop a person from ever getting on a plane. Some individuals panic when they book a vacation, or even when they think about an airplane.

Ways To Overcome Fear Of Flying

There are lots of ways to overcome aviophobia, including virtual reality, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and hypnotherapy for the fear of flying.

Here are some of them:

1. Group Therapy and Classes

There are lots of programs all over the country that can help you reprogram your fearful thoughts.

The objective of these programs is to get participants to feel good about being on airplanes. Some of these programs involve watching hours of videos, participatory exercises, and supplementary phone counseling.

There are weekend sessions where people do exercises designed to short circuit panic attacks, to sap them of their power. There’s also training that helps attendees uncover their triggers, so they can respond to them in an emotionally healthy way.

By doing this, you’ll uncover the triggers that activate your fear. Then, the therapist will give you strategies for dealing with them.

What’s great about this method is the therapist can repeatedly replay a scene to build up your confidence in your ability to respond. The therapist can zoom in on aspects of the flight experience that cause the most anxiety (like takeoffs or turbulence).

3. Box Up Your Anxiety

One of the best ways to deal with your anxiety is to fully accept it.

The more you don’t want to feel fearful about flying, the more that feeling will grow in power—even to the point where it becomes unmanageable, and your mental health suffers.  So instead, allow your anxiety to be there without mentally labeling it.

Notice how every part of your body feels, from your head down to your feet.

Let the anxious energy ebb and flow. Then, imagine stuffing this energy into a carry-on bag, which you store far above you. This teaches your mind that you can set your worries aside for the trip’s duration, blessedly free from the mental baggage that could ruin it.

You can also do the “10-Second Grip.” This is where you tightly grab your armrests while contracting all of the muscles in your body. Hold for ten seconds, then let go as you inhale.

Then, exhale.

Because this little exercise loosens your muscles, it should also help you free your mind of anxiety.

4. Track One-Hour Intervals

Tracking your flight in one-hour intervals is an excellent technique to keep anxiety at bay.

To use this method, write down how long your flight will be (Pilots always announce how long the flight is over the intercom at the beginning of the trip.)

Bring a map with you so you can draw a line between the place of your departure and the city where you’ll land. Divide the line into intervals corresponding to your trip’s duration.

Set your phone alarm to alert you every hour, and make a mark indicating your current location on the line. This should significantly decrease your anxiety, keeping it within manageable levels.

5. Educate Yourself

Educating yourself about how a plane behaves in the air can go a long way to assuage your fears.

To do that, check out some books from your local library to learn everything there is to know about how airplanes work.

Then, you’ll realize that turbulence doesn’t mean the world is ending—that it’s a natural part of air travel and doesn’t mean that something wrong’s going to happen. You’ll also know that all those strange noises you hear aren’t signs that the plane’s falling apart. And if you understand that the sound underneath the plane is the landing gear being lowered, you might become a little less nervous.

You can also get some books on the physiological changes your brain undergoes when you experience air-borne terror.

This will help you control your own body’s reactions.

Another thing to do is to go to YouTube to find videos of planes taking off and landing. This will help you to become more psychologically acclimated to the process.
